Hello, I currently have a four month old AB male and I'm pulling my hair out of my head because he is always scratching. He bites his legs and whines while he is doing so. I tried a hydrocortisone shot from the vet and that gave him relief for only three days. I bought a special shampoo and conditioner and that doesn't help him either. I have been giving him a benadrly pill everyday and that's not helping him either. Does anyone else have any suggestions for my baby. I just want him to be comfortable and happy. Please help me!!!!

Hi Connie,
My AB went through the same thing..she is now 18 months old and she still has reactions to certain things...my vet recommended that I change her food...I feed her Innova (Evo). She also takes Hydroxyzine ..50mg per day...I feed her flax seed oil and she doesn't get any "people food". I bathe her once a week (per his recommendation) with Alodine shampoo. It is used mainly on horses but it can be used on dogs too. I give her a flea treatment once a month also...as long as I am consistent with this regimen she does very well. I hope some of these suggestions help. Penny

New to this so please bear with me.. I too have had Skin problems with my AB as well she is 13months old. She will break out to wear she looks like she has been bitten by a truck load of mosquitoes. This has happened 3 times to me in the past 2 months. But I have noticed that your puppy is mainly white and, mine is all white which the vet. told me that this causes them to be very sensitive almost comparing mine to a/an fair skinned person. I have to give my girl Prednisone 10mg for 10 days when she breaks out. The vet game me a bottle of 50 since i keep having to come back so many times. It cost me little over 200 dollars...I know ouch!!! Hope this helps but best thing to do always is to run your pup to the vet and see what he thinks.

Try Chlorenphenaramine 4mg tabs you can get over the counter. Just like people, dogs only respond to certain allergy meds. If benadryl has not worked even after increasing the does try a different one. My AB take 2 in the am and 2 in the pm.

Ours broke out in a rash after eating a particular brand of dog food. She swelled up and had welts, her mouth and head looked odd shaped she was so swollen. Once we switched her food and gave her benadryl for a couple days she was back to normal.

Hi I do not want to come off as a know it all but sometimes vets are like doctors they know symptoms and drugs better than they know dogs and the cause. A white dog being weaker has been dispelled several times over. It is like one of those urban legends you here. Everyone used to put white boxers down accept us when I was a kid. Ours were most always stronger and healthier. There is a man now in the last twenty years that has tracked his breeding and 4 other kennels that he works closely with and all their offspring and colors and the whites live longer than another color by nearly 8% of the average lifespan and record 30% less veterinarian visits. On of the dogs JDJ used in his breeding program was a white boxer. And my great granddad always owned these mostly white to white bulldogs on the ranch in West Texas in heats of 105 with know skin or overheating problems. I have recently discovered that many premium dog foods use euthanised animals and roadkill. Los Angeles ships 2 million tons of euthanized animals to mills a year. I was having similar problems in black Neapolitan and they found that her intestines were also swollen and she constantly battled kidney and bladder infections. All in the first 10 mths of life. I was paying 40 + dollars a bag for her food and when I talked to my dad who was raised a breeder he said son why do you let marketing sell you? You know we always fed corn based foods and never had health or lifespan issues. Folks our dogs always saw at least 14 years of age. But now due to the junk in foods the see 10-11 at best. I have since gone back to the brand that is named the same as your certificate you get when you request your dogs ancestors and have absolutely no problems. Just think about it from a common sense stand point. Dogs had longer lifespans 40 years ago before premium dog foods than they are recording now. And yes some of it is due to irresponsible breeding, but you know they have found out now that children are developing all levels of autism due to the immunization shots. I am just saying what my father said to me don't be so easily sold. I due believe that there are a couple of good premium dog foods out there, and I will be switching to them on working dogs but for the average family companion the extra protein, minerals and vitamins is not needed seeing as how they do not need to recover from any exercise programs. Good luck to all This is just food for thought.
